Family Squabbles | Godly Family Bible Study

This has been a trying week. Not at work. Not at home. Not at church.

This has been a trying week with Christian brothers and sisters.

Oh? You thought it was one big happy family? LOL. Here’s a reality check. Just like our real-life family, there are squabbles and cliques inside the family of God.

This isn’t about theology or the essentials of the faith. This is about Christians interacting and dealing with fellow brothers and sisters who just don’t seem to get along.

Why do I find myself so much at odds with fellow Christians? Why is it so hard to have grace when we mess up? Why can’t Christians go to each other in love to work on disagreements?

We are imperfect people who need a savior. We will and do make mistakes. We are not always right and we are not always wrong. We are forgiven and we are hypocrites. We need accountability and counsel. We need guidance and rebuke.

Why is it so hard for Christians to recognize this?

It’s easy when we talk to non-Christians. We don’t expect them to be like us as they are of the world and we can have empathy for them as we were once of the world. But when it comes to fellow Christians, we expect so much more of them whether they are new or mature Christians.

I keep seeing Christians go on the attack as if they have all of the knowledge and their way is the true way (on the non-essentials). I have seen so many Christians quit groups and organizations rather than listen and work things out. Friends who are now enemies and yet still Christian.

2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV

We are called to be like Jesus. So why do we act like the apostles?

Talk with your brother and sister. If the one-to-one isn’t resolving, bring in another family member to be part of the discussion.

15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. Matthew 18:15-16 ESV

Pray and follow the biblical mandate.

God will restore and resolve.

For the love of God, let’s get along. After all, we are family and we will be spending an eternity together.
